James & Meryl Hearst Center for the Arts

James Schell Hearst was born on August 8, 1900 to Charles and Katherine Hearst on Maplehearst Farm in Black Hawk County. He was the eldest of four children. Hard work and solid education were important values to the family but there was still time for fun. James enjoyed baseball and played semi-pro ball as a teenager. Meryl Norton Hearst was born May 2, 1903 in Algona, Iowa to Burton and Nettie Norton. She was one of six children, four girls and two boys. Caring for her grandfather during his final months helped to influence her to pursue a career in nursing. A genuinely concerned and nurturing person, Meryl said that caring for others "helped me feel like I was doing something worthwhile."
